Getinge beats estimates helped by tariff refund, cost controls (updated)

UPDATE 1-Getinge beats estimates helped by tariff refund, cost controls

Rewrites throughout, adds CFO comments from interview, share performance

- Swedish medical equipment maker Getinge GETIb.ST reported stronger-than-expected second-quarter core earnings on Friday, helped by a 336 million crown tariff refund, price increases and productivity improvements, sending its shares up 9%.

Getinge reported adjusted earnings before interest, taxes and amortisation (EBITA) of 1.48 billion Swedish crowns ($153.24 million) for the quarter, up 49% from a year earlier. This was above analysts' average estimate of 1.37 billion crowns, according to a company-provided poll.

The company, which makes products for surgery, intensive care and sterilisation, said its adjusted EBITA margin of 17.6% was positively impacted by a tariff refund of around 336 million Swedish crowns.

"We do a very successful work ... in mitigating these extra costs that we have for tariffs, and it's very positive that we got this refund so quickly," CFO Agneta Palmer told Reuters in an interview.

Getinge has been grappling with higher U.S. import tariffs, which have pressured margins and prompted the company to raise prices, cut costs and adjust its supply chain. The company manufactures more than 60% of its products in the United States.

Palmér said tensions in the Middle East had caused shipping delays of a couple of days in some cases, but higher transportation costs had been largely offset through alternative shipping options, limiting the impact on customers and the company's financial performance.

The company confirmed its forecast for organic sales growth of 3% to 5% in 2026, compared with 4.9% growth last year.
